5 Ideas for Decorating Above Kitchen Cabinets

Do you have a gap between your kitchen cabinets and your ceiling that you’re not sure what to do with? Lucky for you, that space can be both functional and decorative.

Here are 5 ideas for decorating above your kitchen cabinets that you may not have thought of before:

1. Show Off Your Vintage Cookware

Do you have any kitchen appliances or cookware that’s been handed down from generation to generation? Even though you may use these things, you can also re-purpose these vintage treasures as decor on top of your cabinets. Having them out on display will also demonstrate your appreciation for them while adding some retro flair to your space.

2. Create (Cook)Bookshelves

If you have enough space between the tops of your cabinets and your ceiling, consider turning the space into bookshelves for your cookbooks! Add accent pieces like porcelain plate sets to add character to the spaces in between your cookbooks and start dusting off those old cookbooks more often!

3. Display Art Pieces (And Support Independent Makers)

The space above your cabinets doesn’t have to be boring, in fact, it doesn’t even have to be kitchen-related. Make a statement by curating and displaying one-of-a-kind, handmade items. You can find unique pieces at local makers markets, local gift shops, thrift stores and online at websites like Etsy (not to mention, you can support local and independent makers this way)!

4. Create a Secret Stash

Functionality doesn’t have to be sacrificed to decorate above your kitchen cabinets. Use the space to store things like extra cutting boards and picnic baskets you might not have room to store elsewhere. Group things in designated sections by type or color to create an organized look, or focus on interspersing items of different sizes for a more eclectic vibe.

5. Plants!

One of our favorite ways to spruce up any room is to add greenery. Plants not only improve the air quality, but they bring life to the spaces they’re in. Not all plants will do well in dimly lit areas, so focus on low-maintenance plants like succulents (or go faux)!

Transform your kitchen with unique decorations in the space above your kitchen cabinets.
